We’re nearing the end of this year, and in the midst of all the parties and gift-giving of the holiday season, you’re probably looking into the new year with some new year goals for yourself.

Many new year’s resolutions are based on what we’ve learned from the previous year and what we’d like to change. As an entrepreneur working on expanding your business, you may be saying to yourself:

  • What I’m doing now isn’t working for me
  • I’ve got to shake things up, figure out where I’m headed
  • I’ve got to take all of my ideas and make sure I’m pressing forward with the right ones
  • This time, it has to work for ME

With that in mind, here are four things you should consider as you enter the new year.

1. Go Back to the Fundamentals

Let’s use basketball as an analogy for solidifying your fundamentals. You can never practice too many lay-ups and foul shots. They’re fundamental.

And most of the time, when we feel like we’re headed in the wrong direction, it’s because we’ve bypassed the fundamentals.

Ask yourself the following five questions every great brand should answer:

  • Who do you serve?
  • How do you serve them?
  • What qualifies you to serve them?
  • How does it make their life better?
  • What makes you different?

You must know your answers to the questions above before you can begin building your brand and growing your business in the new year.

2. Know Why You’re Doing It

As people build their brands and business, it’s easy to fall into the whirlpool of day-to-day problems that can cause stress. Before you know it, you’ve lost your focus and motivation to keep going.

Remind yourself of why you chose your profession. Was it the people you could help? The freedom it would give you to spend time with your family? A fierce passion for what you do?

Whatever that is, knowing why will serve as your daily reminder to motivate and inspire you to continue. It may sound trivial, but it’s perhaps the most crucial part of your success.

3. Find Help To Get You There Faster

We have four coaches right now, and every single one has helped us work smarter and get to the finish line faster.

Could we have done the things they’ve taught us ourselves? Technically, yes. But two things would have happened if we did:

  • We would not have done it to the standards of our coaches, who do this daily. We would have missed critical things or put too much emphasis on things that don’t matter.
  • We would have wasted so much time and taken our eyes off what we needed to accomplish. Since time is money, it would have cost us a lot more to do it ourselves.

Ask yourself — what would it mean to your life if you could introduce yourself to 100,000 more prospects this year? And not just any prospects but the right prospects?

What would it mean if you had social proof of your success and didn’t have to spend all of your time begging and convincing people to do business with you?

You’re going to be promoting yourself somewhere in the new year. So, how are you presenting yourself? Are you leaving money on the table every time you put yourself out there?

4. Pull Your Ideas Into One Clear & Focused Presence

This step can keep you circling the wagons for years with no clear direction.

If you’re like most of the coaches, creators, and experts we work with, you’ve got a thousand ideas and at least four projects going on right now.

It could be a new book, a TED talk, a podcast, a new course or coaching program you’re working on, or even a new target customer you want to start attracting.

All of the ideas sound great to you. And if you could do them all, wouldn’t that bring in massive revenue?

But the reality is — you can’t do them all. You have a limited amount of time and energy.

And when your ideas aren’t streamlined into one concise way to present yourself, you leave money on the table.
